Adam Witham Enrolls as Venable Scholar

2012 Aug 31

Adam Markley Witham, a graduate of Cave Spring High School, has enrolled at Hampden-Sydney College with the Class of 2016 as a Venable Scholar. Adam is the son of Michael & Dianne Witham of Roanoke.

The Venable Scholarship is named for Richard Morton Venable, a descendant of one of the College's founders and a member of the Class of 1920. Venable Scholars are recognized for distinguished achievement in secondary school. They are offered a wide variety of intellectual challenges and independent study, thereby broadening and complementing their traditional academic pursuits.

When asked about this year's honors students, Dr. Jennifer E. Vitale, Elliott Associate Professor of Psychology and Director of the Honors Program, stated, "This year, Hampden-Sydney College welcomes one of the largest freshman classes in the College's history. Among them are 56 talented and intellectually gifted Hampden-Sydney Honors scholars. A diverse group of student with interests ranging from Model UN to welding, from homes as near as Farmville to as far as Hanoi, these young men will do much to enrich the college environment both inside and outside of the classroom."

A private college for men, Hampden-Sydney is ranked in the top tier of liberal arts colleges by U.S. News & World Report. The College is known for its liberal arts curriculum, the Honor Code which stresses individual and collective responsibility, and a focus on the education of young men.
