2012 Aug 20

Between mid-May and mid-June, Hampden-Sydney College student Brandon A. Long studied the Spanish language, culture, and contemporary issues at the Universidad de Alcalá De Henares in Spain. Long is a graduate of J.R. Tucker High School and is the son of Anthony & Kelly Long of Glen Allen.

This opportunity is offered to Hampden-Sydney students by the Global Education and Study Abroad Department at H-SC through the University of Franklin at the Universidad de Alcalá. Students reside in private homes during their stay and the personal contact with host families provides a first-hand experience of Spanish life and culture.

Tours of Madrid and Alcalá de Henares include a visit to Cervantes' birthplace (Alcalá de Henares), Las Ventas bullring (Madrid), El Retiro, El Palacio de Oriente and its surrounding gardens, La Plaza Mayor, Puerta del Sol, and the Universidad Complutense.

A private college for men, Hampden-Sydney is ranked in the top tier of liberal arts colleges by U.S. News & World Report. The College is known for its liberal arts curriculum, the Honor Code which stresses individual and collective responsibility, and a focus on the education of young men.
