Dereck Parada Receives Public Service Certificate at Hampden-Sydney College

Hampden-Sydney College senior Dereck Onofre Parada recently received the prestigious James Madison Public Service Certificate from Dr. David E. Marion, Director of the Wilson Center, and Dr. Christopher B. Howard, President of Hampden-Sydney College, on behalf of the Wilson Center for Leadership in the Public Interest. The Public Service Certificates are presented to seniors who have successfully completed a two-year concentration of classes, internship, and research and who are seriously considering careers in public service.

Derek has served as president of both the social fraternity Theta Chi and the Hampden-Sydney chapter of Habitat for Humanity and is a member of the Garnet & Grey Society (admissions tour guide). He was instumental in organizing blood drives for the fraternity and assisting in the Big Event, the College's major community service event. Dereck is currently interning with the County of Prince Edward where he is involved in a community mapping project. He completed his summer public service internship with United Way Worldwide in Washington, DC. Dereck, a foreign affairs major, is a graduate of West Potomac High School and is the son of Ms. Thea Nelson and Mr. Ramon Parada, both of Alexandria.

A private college for men, Hampden-Sydney is ranked in the top tier of liberal arts colleges by U.S. News & World Report. The College is known for its liberal arts curriculum, the Honor Code which stresses individual and collective responsibility, and a focus on the needs of young men.
