Derrick Maxwell Receives Military Leadership/National Security Studies Certificate

On Friday, April 20, Hampden-Sydney College senior Shawn Derrick Maxwell, Jr. received the Military Leadership/National Security Studies Program Certificate from Dr. James Y. Simms, Jr., Professor Emeritus of History; Dr. Christopher B. Howard, President of Hampden-Sydney College; and Lt. Col Rucker Snead, Director of Career Development. Hampden-Sydney's Wilson Center for Leadership in the Public Interest initiated the program in the Spring of 2005 for students interested in the historical, political, cultural, ethical, and legal dimensions of national security policy as well as the place and role of the military in American society.

Derrick has served as a student manager for the Fuqua International Communications Center on campus and as a member of the Student Senate Library Initiative. He is a member of the Society of '91 (leadership program), Circle K International, and the Anglers Club. A government major, Derrick is a graduate of Hermitage High School and is the son of Shawn D. & Pamela S. Maxwell of Glen Allen.

A private college for men, Hampden-Sydney is ranked in the top tier of liberal arts colleges by U.S. News & World Report. The College is known for its liberal arts curriculum, the Honor Code which stresses individual and collective responsibility, and a focus on the needs of young men.
