Ian Giles Initiated into Phi Beta Kappa at Hampden-Sydney College

Hampden-Sydney College senior Ian Christopher Giles was initiated into the honor society Phi Beta Kappa on Tuesday, April 3. Membership recognizes the highest academic achievement, moral character, responsible citizenship, and broad intellectual curiosity.

A Patrick Henry Scholar, Ian serves as a Resident Advisor and played offensive line on the varsity football team. He was named to the ODAC All-Academic Team for the 2008-09 and 2009-10 seasons. Ian is a volunteer at Southside Community Hospital and is a member of the honorary societies Omicron Delta Kappa (leadership) and Chi Beta Phi (scientific), the Appeals Committee, the Garnet & Grey Society (admissions tour guide), the Pre-Health Society, the Society of '91 (leadership program), and the professional scientific fraternity, Alpha Chi Sigma. He was the recipient at Final Convocation in April 2011 of the Topham Chemistry Award and was recognized for leadership in the 2012 edition of Who's Who Among Students in Universities and Colleges. A chemistry and biology major, Ian is a graduate of Northside High School and is the son of son of Mr. & Mrs. James L. Giles of Roanoke.

A private college for men, Hampden-Sydney is ranked in the top tier of liberal arts colleges by U.S. News & World Report. The College is known for its liberal arts curriculum, the Honor Code which stresses individual and collective responsibility, and a focus on the needs of young men.
