Ian Giles Presents Departmental Honors Project at H-SC

2012 Apr 13

Hampden-Sydney College senior Ian Christopher Giles presented his Departmental Honors Project recently in a public lecture at the College. Ian is one of a select group of students who undertook an extended research project which culminated in a public presentation. Although the departmental honors students are undergraduates, they are expected to pursue their research project at a graduate-school level. Each project is evaluated on its originality, on the thoroughness of its research methods, and on the quality of the final presentation.

Ian's project, for Honors in Chemistry, was entitled " Electron Spin Resonance and Cell Biology Studies of Potentially Hepatotoxic Kava Root Extracts." A chemistry and biology major, Ian is a graduate of Northside High School and is the son of Mr. & Mrs. James L. Giles of Roanoke.

A private college for men, Hampden-Sydney is ranked in the top tier of liberal arts colleges by U.S. News & World Report. The College is known for its liberal arts curriculum, the Honor Code which stresses individual and collective responsibility, and a focus on the needs of young men.
