Marcus Payne Initiated into Phi Beta Kappa

Hampden-Sydney College senior Marcus Gabriel Payne was initiated into the honor society Phi Beta Kappa on Monday, April 8. Membership recognizes the highest academic achievement, moral character, responsible citizenship, and broad intellectual curiosity.

A Patrick Henry Scholar, Marcus played defensive line on the varsity football team and was four times named to the All-ODAC Academic Team. He serves as President of the honorary society Eta Sigma Phi (classics) and is a member of Omicron Delta Kappa (leadership) and Phi Alpha Theta (history). He is also a member of the Classics Club and the leadership program Society of 1791. A history and classics major, Marcus is a graduate of The Covenant School and is the son of Don & Patty Payne of Charlottesville.

A private college for men, Hampden-Sydney is ranked in the top tier of liberal arts colleges by U.S. News & World Report. The College is known for its liberal arts curriculum, the Honor Code which stresses individual and collective responsibility, and a focus on the education of young men.
