Scooter Thomas Receives Military Leadership/National Security Studies Certificate

On Friday, April 20, Hampden-Sydney College senior Edward Franklin Thomas III received the Military Leadership/National Security Studies Program Certificate from Dr. James Y. Simms, Jr., Professor Emeritus of History; Dr. Christopher B. Howard, President of Hampden-Sydney College; and Lt. Col Rucker Snead, Director of Career Development. Hampden-Sydney's Wilson Center for Leadership in the Public Interest initiated the program in the Spring of 2005 for students interested in the historical, political, cultural, ethical, and legal dimensions of national security policy as well as the place and role of the military in American society.

Scooter has served as Treasurer for the social fraternity Lambda Chi Alpha and is a member of the Garnet & Grey Society (admissions tour guides) and the Acousticals a capella group. During the spring of 2011, he interned at The Institute of World Politics in Washington, DC. Scooter completed the US Marine Corps Officer Candidate School PLC Option and will be commissioned a 2nd LT during commencement in May. He will then report to the Marine Corps Basic School at Quantico. A religion major, Scooter is a graduate of Altamont School and is the son of Ed & Caroline Thomas of Birmingham.

A private college for men, Hampden-Sydney is ranked in the top tier of liberal arts colleges by U.S. News & World Report. The College is known for its liberal arts curriculum, the Honor Code which stresses individual and collective responsibility, and a focus on the needs of young men.
